Having a place to talk, feel understood, and acquire life skills that will help you get through tough times is crucial, regardless of whether you're a new student looking to learn how to support your mental health during your time in university or a current student who has been dealing with difficult emotions. provide support to all current York Undergrad students who need someone to talk to about what’s going on for them. Common topics include: academic stress, relationship concerns, mental health concerns, unhealthy situations, loss of something or someone important, and anything else you want to chat about.

How is my appointment going to go?

Students who participate in individual peer support should anticipate a compassionate, safe setting where they can talk about and analyze feelings, experiences, and thoughts pertaining to their daily lives and general well-being. Appointments for individual peer support are made online via a secure calendly link or in person at the YFS Wellness Centre. Although 30 minutes is the standard appointment time, it can be modified to meet the needs of the student.

Peer Supporters: Who are they?

Peer Supporters empower and help others by drawing on their personal experiences managing mental health issues. This is frequently accomplished by utilizing interpersonal skills to promote self-worth, connection, and confidence. Peer Supporters are trained in topics including fostering relationships, promoting dialogue, and empowering people via advocacy and empathy.

What distinguishes counseling from peer support?

Individual and group peer support programs are not intended to serve as clinical treatment for mental illness or mental health issues in general. Although the work we do together is uplifting and affirming, it is not psychotherapy, counseling, or intended to take the place of either.

If looking for clinical or mental health supports our volunteers can help with accessing these services on campus or elsewhere!

If you’re interested in using this service and booking a virtual appointment or in person appointment (Wednesday’s only) with our Peer Support Volunteers, please register using the Calendly below!

PLEASE NOTE: YFS Peer Support services are not crisis services. If you have any questions, concerns or require any assistance please email yfswellness.h4y@gmail.com or wellness@yfs.ca.
